Talbot Humane teams up to save more lives

Easton, Maryland — Talbot Humane is partnering with Caroline County Humane Society (CCHS) and Best Friends Animal Society as part of Best Friends’ Prince and Paws Shelter Collaborative Program with a goal of increasing lifesaving for dogs and cats entering Caroline County Humane Society.

The shelter collaborative program matches shelters that are leaders in animal welfare with shelters that are working to save more animals. The goal of the partnership is to achieve as close as possible to a 90% save rate at Caroline County Humane Society by the end of the year grant program. This would mean that 90% of the dogs and cats entering their care leave alive, understanding that some animals will be too medically or behaviorally fragile to be released. Best Friends helps to facilitate these matches, works with peer mentors to create a contract that includes clear grant parameters, provides mentors with seed grants, and offers ongoing training and coaching to mentors and fellows.

Talbot Humane is a national leader in animal welfare and was chosen to partner with Caroline County Humane Society because they have experience overcoming many of the challenges CCHS faces each day.

“We are both open admission shelters on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Talbot Humane has faced many of the same challenges over the years CCHS is seeing such as unmanaged free roaming cat populations and lack of resources for pet owners. We know with community support and the passion of their staff and volunteers CCHS will be able to increase their save rate. This mentorship is something we are proud to be a part of as we have worked together with Caroline County Humane Society for several years.”  said Patty Crankshaw-Quimby, Executive Director of Talbot Humane.

Through the shelter collaborative program, Best Friends will be providing grant funding to cover the expenses associated with achieving the partnership’s goals. Caroline County Humane Society will use the funding to implement nationally recognized proven strategies to decrease unnecessary intake and increase adoptions, community engagement and rescue partnerships. These proven strategies have been successful at saving dogs and cats at Talbot Humane.

Together, Talbot Humane and Caroline County Humane Society expect these strategies to eliminate the need to euthanize healthy adoptable animals at Caroline County Humane Society.

The shelter collaborative program is a cornerstone of Best Friends Animal Society’s goal of making America a no-kill nation by 2025, according to Carrie Ducote, National Senior Strategist for the Shelter Collaborative Program.

“Creating and sustaining no-kill in communities across the country will only be possible if shelters, community members and other stakeholders work together,” Ducote said. “As more organizations collaborate to save the lives of homeless pets, we will achieve no-kill in every shelter and every community by 2025.”

Patty Crankshaw-Quimby Receives Prestigious Certified Animal Welfare Administrator Credential

Easton, MD – Patty Crankshaw-Quimby, executive director of Talbot Humane & chief Animal Control Officer, recently earned her Certified Animal Welfare Administrator certification through The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, an independent agency whose mission is to help develop strong leaders and promote standards of practice in the animal welfare profession.  Crankshaw-Quimby is now one of several hundred individuals to hold this prestigious designation.

The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement administers the Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) program which distinguishes top-level executives and managers working in both nonprofit and municipal animal welfare agencies. In addition to meeting strict eligibility requirements for leadership and management in the animal welfare field, Crankshaw-Quimby needed to pass a rigorous exam to earn her CAWA designation.

The CAWA exam covers best practices in animal welfare with questions reviewing leadership, human resources, finance, fundraising, marketing, administration, and animal care.  Obtaining her CAWA status validates her work in the animal welfare field and illustrates her competency to contribute to broader animal welfare conversations as they pertain to her community and across the country.

Jim Tedford, The Association’s CEO noted, “Certified Animal Welfare Administrators have demonstrated that they hold specialized qualifications and a commitment to high standards and ethical practices in our industry. We respect their dedication to their own professional development and their pursuit of leadership excellence.”

UNLEASHED Returns for Year 10

We are so excited to share our Charity Running Program- UNLEASHED for Talbot Humane is returning- and it is the program’s 10th anniversary!  This program has taken hundreds of local friends across finish lines over the past 10 years, and raised close to $400,000 for the animals.

This wholly supportive, non-competitive program seriously takes everyone- from couch potato to weekend warrior and teaches & trains you through the Galloway run:walk program. You are put in a pace group with others of the same fitness level. You encourage each other and WILL cross that finish line together each week of training, and at the final day- race day!

In exchange for training, runners agree to raise funds for Talbot Humane. “It is truly a win: win situation,” says veteran UNLEASHER Sara Rhoades. “I never would have thought I could finish a half marathon 10 years ago- and here I am still running and racing today at age 71 with UNLEASHED! If you are looking to change your life- this is the group for you.” Changing your life and the lives of animals- what could be better?

This year we are training for the Richmond Half Marathon. It a race we have trained members for in the past, so we know all the ins and outs of race day!

If you are interested in being added to our informational email list add your information here- (please note we never sell or share your information!) https://hipaa.jotform.com/pattycquimby/unleashed-email-opt-in-form
