Policies & Fees

Talbot Humane does our best to find the ideal home for all pets awaiting adoption. Some of these pets have special needs and may not be the best fit for everyone. Because of this, applications are considered on a “best fit” not “first come” basis. Upon approval, applications will be kept on file for 6 months while together we search for the right pet for you and your family.

AT THIS TIME ALL PET VISITATION IS BY APPOINTMENT FOLLOWING AN APPROVED ADOPTION APPLICATION.

The following is required to complete your application:
  • A copy of your license or ID
    • Applicants must be 21 years of age or older
  • Complete application fully. Any omitted information may cause delay in processing.
  • Veterinary history for any pets in your care for the last 5 years.
    • Current pets should receive annual physicals. We require that pets currently living in the home are vaccinated against rabies as required by law and distemper as recommended by your veterinarian. Dogs should be on heartworm preventative and cats must be FeLV/FIV free unless adopting a cat with this condition.
    • If you do not have this information from your veterinarian this will cause delay in processing.
  • If you rent an up to date copy of your lease and/or a current name and number of your property owner.
    • Failure to provide this will result is delay of application.
  • Any application pending for 30 or more days will be purged. Upon updating your information we welcome you to reapply.
  • We reserve the right to a home visit prior to adoption.

(Even if you have not selected a pet, we strongly recommend that you complete an application and gain pre-approval, as it will make the process much faster once you have identified your pet of choice.)

Most animals exhibit different behavior when outside their kennel. As a result, you will spend time with the pet either in our animal socialization room or doggie play yard. If you are planning to adopt a dog as a companion to a current pet, we highly encourage potential adopters to schedule a time with the adoption coordinator to introduce the two. The dogs will assist you and the adoption coordinator in determining whether they are a good fit for one another.

The application evaluation process will generally be completed within 24-48 hours- often sooner! Upon completion & approval of the application you will schedule an appointment with our adoption coordinator to pick up your new friend! It is as simple as signing a few forms, receiving information on your new pet as well as suggestions for introducing your new family member to your home. This is a great time for you to come prepared to ask questions or address concerns. Our staff is always happy to help! Be sure to bring a carrier or a leash and collar suitable for your new family member. You may choose to purchase a leash and collar (many, guaranteed for the life of your pet) at time of adoption at a 25% discount from our boutique located right here at our adoption center.

Enjoy many years of fun & companionship with your new pet. We love when families send photos & updates for us to include on our website & Shelter Tales newsletter. Our staff & volunteers spend many hours with our pets before they find their furrever homes, and enjoy hearing how our friends are doing!
