Talbot Humane is so proud to announce we have joined forces with fellow Maryland  humane and animal control facilities to place 2,000 cats and kittens in new homes during the month of July!  Fees will be waived at all of these facilities and each one will have other special incentives. 

For the month of July, Talbot Humane FELINE adopters will receive:

• Free post adoption wellness exams from participating veterinarians:  All Pets Veterinary Hospital, Easton Veterinary Clinic, Community Animal Hospital, Mid-Atlantic Cat Hospital, Spay Now, Inc., Pet Health Clinic.

Our open admission shelter could not do all we do without the support of adopters, donors, volunteers and well wishers.  If you are considering adoption of a new cat or kitten, July is the right time to fall in love! Hill’s Partners with Local Shelters to Enhance Emergency Planning in Communities

Easton, Maryland– In recognition of National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day on May 13, 2017, Talbot Humane is joining Hill’s Pet Nutrition and its network of animal shelter partners to encourage pet parents to fully consider their pets in their emergency planning.

In times of crisis, people are often told to leave their homes for a “short time,” only to find that they cannot return for days or even weeks. As a result, community animal shelters are overwhelmed with lost and separated cats and dogs following a disaster.

“Being prepared is the best step families can take to ensure that they and their pets are ready to face an emergency,” said Joann Fuller, who oversees Hill’s Pet Nutrition Food, Shelter & Love® program. “Plus, knowing that a kit is packed and ready to go can put families at ease.”

Hill’s annual campaign is aimed at educating pet families on ways they can stay safer and be better prepared to survive a disaster. This year, Hill’s enlisted the help of Talbot Humane and other shelter partners in its Hill’s Food, Shelter & Love® program to help raise awareness on the importance of becoming pet prepared.

“Helping our residents and pets during an emergency is extremely important to our organization.” Said Patty Quimby, Executive Director of Talbot Humane.  “The Talbot Animal Disaster Services  Team has been in place and ready to assist our residents during weather or other catastrophic emergencies where an emergency shelter would need to be opened since 2010.  Providing the tools to our residents to be prepared in the event of an emergency is a priority.”  Quimby adds, “Preparedness saves lives.”

Together with Hill’s, Talbot Humane suggests families build a Pet Emergency Go-Kit and store it with the rest of the family’s emergency preparations:

• Basic first aid supplies
• A 3-day supply of bottled water and the pet’s preferred food, held in a waterproof container
• Safety harness and leash
• Waste clean-up supplies
• Medications and a copy of the pet’s medical records
• List of veterinarians and local pet care organizations
• List of the pet’s feeding routine and any behavioral issues
• Comfort items, such as a blanket or favorite toy, to help keep the pet calm and comfortable

They also recommend the following Tips to Help Ensure Your Pet’s Safety in an Emergency:

• Ensure your pet’s identification by using a microchip or collar ID tag, and make sure that your contact information is up-to-date.
• Display a pet rescue decal on your front door or window to let first responders know there is a pet in the house. Include your veterinarian’s contact information.
• Learn where your pet likes to hide in your house when frightened. Finding your pet quickly will help you evacuate faster.
• Identify a location to take your pet if you need to leave your immediate area. Keep in mind that disaster shelters for people may not be open to pets. Scout hotels and motels with pet-friendly policies and ask relatives or friends if they could house you and your pet.
• Carry a picture of your pet in the event of separation.
• If you need to evacuate, consider taking a pet carrier or crate for transport and safe-keeping.

For the 3rd year our Talbot County high school guys are being GREAT sports and leaping out of their comfort zones for the animals in need! Come see a hilarious evening for the 3rd Annual Womanless Beauty Pageant! Each young man has a “coach” to show them the ropes, help them with their talent competition and make them beauties.

We know all of the students involved are truly beautiful inside and out for spending their time to raise funds for the animals of Talbot Humane. There are 2 winners that evening, Judges Choice and People’s Choice- that means YOU help choose with your donations! So bring some cash and be ready to pick your favorite contestant!

Tickets are $10 for adults, students $5. Refreshments will be available for sale too! Tickets are available at Talbot Humane, Little Rascals, Head to Tail Thrift and Vintage and Rise Up Coffee, or at the door.

Residents of Talbot County and  Dorchester County can benefit from our FREE or LOW COST Spay/Neuter programs thanks to grants from the MD Dept of Agriculture, The Snyder Foundation for Animals and the generosity of private donors. A Fascinating Read for a Great Cause!

Author Gail Buchalter has written a page turner,  “Friday Nigh Fighters” is a fictional tale about a forensic veterinarian and her fight for justice for those without a voice, set right here on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Gail Buchalter is an award-winning journalist who was a staff writer for People magazine and a contributing editor at Parade magazine for 20 years, and arguably one of the longest surviving freelancers at Forbes magazine. She wrote about film, television and recording artists, sports figures and her true love – animals. Gail was born and raised in Manhattan, lived in Nashville, Los Angeles and Southampton, NY, before moving to rural Maryland, where she opened a yoga studio in 2002. A board member of the local humane society, she was also instrumental in helping create a low-cost feral cat spay/neuter organization. She has adopted and fostered numerous cats and dogs, and today lives with her three dogs and two cats on several acres in the woods.

Did you know?

• Since 1932 Talbot Humane, FKA Talbot County Humane Society, FKA Friends to the Animals has been serving animals in need across the Mid-Shore.
• Talbot Humane has had a low or no cost spay/neuter program for public pets since 2000.  As of May 31st, we have already provide free or very low cost surgeries to over 300 pets from the Mid-shore.
• We offer humane education lessons and visits to every school in Talbot County. Just call to schedule a visit!
• Our public pet pantry has been open for owners in need since 2008.  We serve approximately 100 residents monthly.
• We offer pet bereavement services to residents of the Mid-Shore area on the first Thursday of each month.
• Talbot Humane offers a behavioral hotline for pet owners in crisis.  Our goal is to keep pets with caring owners.
• We offer low-cost microchip services to pet owners. The goal, to reunite pets with owners BEFORE they ever reach our doors!
• As our ability to provide services and education to the community has grown over the last 10 years, the number of animals entering our care has dropped by almost 1/2.  This is a testament to the power of education and support!
  
• In order to provide services at the current level, that is provide daily care to animals, animal control services, all of the services listed above and MORE, it costs $2,383 PER DAY, 365 days a year.
