Have a Plan for your Pets!

Talbot Humane and Talbot County Animal Control would like to remind citizens during the times of high winds, heavy rain and potential flooding to PLEASE bring your pets indoors. Talbot Humane will lend crates to those in need during this time. Do not leave dogs tethered out or in confined areas such as kennels, sheds or any other structure which may flood or collapse. Please keep cats indoors during and after the event. Animals suffer from stress just as humans during extremes and may behave erratically, or not recognize their surroundings. If you see a problem within Talbot County, please contact our office at (410)822-0107.

If you are in a danger zone, please plan to leave well in advance of the impending weather event.

You will want to contact friends or family outside of the immediate danger area to stay. Contact local hotels to see if they are pet friendly, or will waive their policy during an emergency. In Easton the following hotels will accommodate pet owners- Tidewater Inn, Days Inn, Comfort Inn and Inn at 202 Dover. These businesses ask that owners call in advance to find out their requirements.

In the event the Social Services Shelter at Easton High School is opened, the Talbot Animal Disaster Services shelter will also open to house pets for those residing in the shelter. Please be advised this shelter IS NOT a drop off for your pets- it is only for those residents living in the shelter. This shelter should also be used as a means of last resort- it will be stressful for you and your pets.

When evacuating your home with pets, owners should bring the following items:

  • A crate or carrier for each pet

  • Medical records, a photo, veterinarians name and number, and any medication for each pet

  • Food for 3 days for each pet

  • Bedding, litter, cleaning supplies for each pet

  • Sturdy leashes, toys and any special items needed for your pet

Pets suffer from stress during these times just like you and me. The best way to protect you and your pets is to be prepared. Have a plan, and do not wait until the last minute to act.

Talbot Humane Welcomes Amy Eutsey as Volunteer Coordinator

first race

The first official race for UNLEASHED in fall 2012.

Amy Eutsey is no stranger to Talbot Humane. In December of 2011 she joined forces with fellow volunteer Julie Fickes to create our very successful and life changing program UNLEASHED.  She has been an important part of our volunteer force since!

Earlier this year Amy joined the staff of Talbot Humane as our part time data entry assistant.  When Susan Langfitt, long time Volunteer and Community Events Coordinator, shared her interest in concentrating on fundraising and development, Amy was an immediate choice to work with the volunteers.

“Susan has left big shoes to fill.  I am excited to work with the dedicated volunteers,” shares Amy. “I love working with and inspiring people, and being a part of the team of Talbot Humane.”

We are thrilled to have Amy join us.   “She has a gentle and friendly nature, is super organized and is committed to the mission of Talbot Humane,” states director Patty Quimby. “We are all excited to have Amy as part of the team.”

2nd Annual Rock On Talbot Humane

Save the Date!

Friday May 29th

The Avalon Theatre

rock on Talbot Humane

The Avalon stage will be rockin’ on May 29, but not with musicians or drums or electric guitars. Local art will take the stage and will blow you away as originality, functionality and charm mingle passionately in Talbot Humane’s second annual “chairity” auction. Rock On Talbot Humane will feature 20 one-of-a-kind, hand painted chairs for live auction to benefit the shelter animals at Talbot Humane. The event is free and open to the public, and it will include an uncommon and exceptional silent auction, delicious food, cash bar, and of course, the Avalon milieu.

“Local artists put their hearts and souls into painting these chairs,” said Susan Langfitt, Volunteer & Community Events Coordinator for Talbot Humane. “Every chair comes back to us transformed from the planks of bare wood they start out as into a beautiful work of art. We love to see where each artist takes this project.”

This year, Rock On Talbot Humane will auction 15 custom-built, rocking Adirondack chairs, five children’s Adirondack chairs, and a signature bench. Each is sponsored by a local business, where it remains on display for the public to enjoy until they are auctioned in May. Chairs will start appearing at local businesses at the end of April. Photos of the painted chairs also will start popping up in the coming weeks on Talbot Humane’s Facebook page, the Rock On Talbot Humane Facebook page, and Talbot Humane’s website at www.talbothumane.org.

“Last year, we raised just over $17,000 for the shelter through our live and silent auctions, and of course, we hope to surpass that at this year’s event,” said Langfitt. “It’s a wonderful way for the public to support the work we do here at Talbot Humane and take home a beautiful piece of artwork they will use and enjoy for years to come.” From the original design of the rocking Adirondack chair, hand-built in Maryland, to the custom art work, Rock On Talbot Humane chairs are worth the investment buyers put both into the chairs and into caring for our community’s homeless animals. Chairs ranged in price last year from $300 to $2,000.

This year’s project features a signature bench, which is displayed at  The Academy of Arts in Easton. Painted by local artist Jonathan Crist, who often combines stain and paint to create iconic Eastern Shore scenes, this year, The Robert Morris Inn is his muse.  A fun addition to this year’s auction, conducted by Buddy Foxwell of Foxwell Auctions in Cambridge, are children’s Adirondacks, which will bring a fun new element to the night, and are include a sports chair and a mermaid theme.   We are certain the “Bidder’s Choice” chair will also be popular.  Famed pet portrait Artist Nancy Norman VanSchaik will be creating a chair of the bidder’s choosing! Imagine your furred love immortalized on a one-of-a-kind rocking Adirondack!

Doors will open at the Avalon at 6:30 pm and the live auction starts at 7 pm on May 29. For more information on the Rock On Talbot Humane project, contact Susan Langfitt at 410-822-0107 or susan@talbothumane.org.
