Talbot Humane is once again participating in Giving Tuesday! We are setting a $10 challenge to our supporters for December 1, 2020! We hope you choose to join us and help reach our goal of 1,000 friends donating $10 each to raise $10,000!
Talbot Humane is pleased to once again be the recipient of funding from the Maryland Department of Agriculture for Spay Neuter Midshore. The grant totaling $28,715 will spay and neuter 434 dogs and cats within Talbot and Dorchester Counties in Maryland for calendar year 2021. “We are thankful for this gift to the animals of our community,” shares Patty Crankshaw-Quimby, executive director of Talbot Humane. “At this time we budget for approximately $60,000 in public spay/neuter services annually to serve residents of Talbot and Dorchester Counties. This does not include complications, medications or above and beyond care these animals may end up needing at the time of surgery. All funds for these programs must be raised through donations and grants. This funding helps lessen some of that financial burden. We could not be more grateful for MDA’s support and belief in what we do for our community.”

We are thrilled to be continuing our Annual Cookie Walk tradition, albeit a little different than years prior. Our amazing volunteers will still be baking thousands of cookies for the animals. This year in an abundance of caution we will be pre-packing boxes which have been pre-ordered. Pick up will still be at The Easton Farmer’s Market on December 19th, 8a-11a.
Boxes are the same size as years prior: 1/2 LB box (small) $12 and 1 lb (large) $15.
We will have some other holiday items for sale the day of pick up too!

Talbot Humane and Talbot Hospice are pleased to be resuming the Pet Loss Support Group in November. “COVID-19 forced us to put our Pet Loss Support Group on hold for several months. This has been a difficult time for many of us, and the death of a pet during these isolating times has compounded these feelings of sadness and loss,” shares Patty Quimby, Executive Director of Talbot Humane.
While still not meeting in person, meetings will resume via Zoom. This group has proven to be much needed for grieving pet owners in our area. The mission of this program is to provide a safe environment to share feelings and those cherished memories of your beloved pets as well as receive feedback and resources for moving through grief. The facilitators of the meeting are pet lovers and can appreciate that the loss of your pet was the loss of a family member.
The first Zoom meeting will be on Thursday November 5th at 6PM, meeting link will open at 5:30P. Call ins or Zoom log ins are both welcome to attend. 2020 certainly hasn’t turned out how most of us planned, and Talbot Humane is no different. At the end of last year, after taking a year off, we were working toward the 10th Anniversary of Bark in the Park on 10-10-2020, but that was not meant to happen.
Talbot Humane’s commitment to the animals in the shelter and community haven’t changed during this year. “The need of support for animals and owners has not gone away,” shares Executive Director Patty Quimby. “We have seen a slight decrease in animals entering our direct care during the pandemic, but the needs in the community for food, medical assistance and spay neuter are stronger than ever. Our inability to be out at community events, hold in person fundraisers and see our friends in person means we have to be creative with how we raise these funds.”
This year is the first year for the Talbot Humane (virtual) Halloween Hustle Dog Walk & 5K. The event was created so families and friends can help the animals of the Midshore even if getting together in person is not possible right now. Sponsored by Bay Imprint, West & Callahan and TCR Event Management, you can register to participate through November 3, 2020. Each individual registrant receives an awesome long-sleeved event t-shirt designed by Bay Imprint. You walk, run, or combo any distance you wish with or without your pets! The event includes a fundraising component where every person who chooses to fundraise has the opportunity to win some cool swag which includes water bottles, registration refund, hoodies and a top fundraiser prize too.
There is also an online costume contest for humans and pets alike! Quimby shares “We may not be in person, but we will still have a “parade” of costumes online to compete!”

Yes, you read that correctly! Thanks to the overwhelming interest, we will be continuing our $10 microchipping services to pets owners into the new year. The cost includes insertion and registration of the chip. “We just had an amazing reunion at the shelter,” shares Executive Director Patty Quimby “A skiddish chihuahua mix had been missing for more than 3 months. A Good Samaritan in Cambridge captured her and brought her to us. Because she was microchipped she and her owner were reunited.”
Quimby stresses the importance of microchipping as well as keeping the information current. “Talbot Humane registers our microchips for the owners to ensure it is completed, but be sure to update your phone number, address and email as they change. Without current information the chip is almost useless.” Quimby shares that this may be done online or with a quick phone call to the company.

Like people, pets require exercise. While it’s easy to fall back on the traditional walk around the block, responsible pet ownership requires owners to discover the kind of exercise their pet loves. While some dogs live for their daily walk, others may prefer a faster pace, in which case a run or strenuous hike with elevation changes might be more appropriate. For cats mental stimulation (even for a few minutes a day) can play a key role in keeping them happy. Other pets may be enriched with a variety of foods or toys too.
Another important responsibility is scheduling and attending regular veterinary check-ups for your pets, seeking appropriate dental care, and providing proper nutrition. Pet medical needs vary with age, so it’s important to discuss with your veterinarian what your pet needs at any particular stage of life.
Your veterinarian can also advise you on any necessary dental care for your dog and cat, such as regular cleaning.
On nutrition, you may need to consider several factors, including age, weight, activity level, allergies, etc. Your vet can help you ascertain the proper amount of food for your pet, as well as any special dietary needs they may have.
There are many fun ways to bond with your dog, from enjoying a morning walk to snuggling on the couch. Training is an excellent way not only to make your dog safer, better behaved, and more social, but also to strengthen the bond you share. pets from guinea pigs to horses can be involved in community events too!
It’s important to make sure there’s a plan in place for you pets if you need to travel without them. As with training, many options exist, including professional pet sitters who make daily visits to your home and boarding kennels where your pet can stay while you travel. Celebrate Responsible Pet Ownership Month by making sure your travel provisions are optimal for your pet’s safety, well-being, and comfort, as well as for your own peace of mind.
Socializing your pet is important at any stage of life, from tiny to senior, and can prove a fun and fulfilling way to celebrate responsible pet ownership. Younger dogs and puppies can benefit greatly from early exposure to situations and circumstances that they are likely to encounter in their everyday life, while older dogs may need help coping with the arrival of new pets or children in the home.
The familiar “safety first” instruction is no less relevant in the context of pet ownership. A vital way to engage in responsible pet ownership is to ensure that your pets thrive in the most secure environment possible. Make sure your yard features adequate fencing and, if your pet spends a lot of time outside, provide clean, fresh, accessible drinking water, as well as shelter from the elements, at all times. Before heading out for a walk, make sure your dog’s collar, harness, and leash are in good condition. Make sure id such as collars, tags and microchipping are up to date!
As we have seen across the country with hurricanes, flooding, fires, being prepared to take care of your pets in an emergency is an important part of pet ownership. Emergency preparations include outfitting windows in your home with stickers notifying emergency personnel that pets are inside, setting aside food, water, and medications for use in an emergency, and preparing a pet first-aid kit and “go-bag” for your pets. In advance of an evacuation, identify pet-friendly hotels and create an evacuation plan that includes your pets.
NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations (NBC and Telemundo owned stations) today announced that its Clear The Shelters pet adoption campaign will run from August 1 to August 31. To help individuals and communities continue to practice safe social distancing measures, the stations’ month-long “Adopt & Donate” effort will feature virtual pet adoptions and make it easy for people to donate online to participating shelters/rescues. This is the sixth consecutive year that NBC and Telemundo owned stations present their popular pet adoption initiative to communities nationwide. Since 2015, NBC and Telemundo owned stations’ Clear The Shelters campaign has helped more than 410,000 pets find new homes.
