Hair O’ the Dog- Wine Making a Difference for the Animals

hair of the dogLocal friends know, Hair O’ The Dog in Easton is always doing something to give back to the community.  As major supporters of our efforts at Talbot Humane they once again are selling Talbot Humane wine to help the animals! “The Petro’s are great friends to the animals- we are blessed to have Joe as a volunteer board member and supporter at Talbot Humane,” shares Patty Quimby, Talbot Humane Executive Director.  The wines, reasonably priced at $13.49 for “Top Dogs” give $1 per bottle back to the animals.

  • Pinot Grigio – A full bodied Pinot Grigio with lots of pizazz and tropical fruit notes. Great for that holiday party.
  • Chardonnay – A charming sipper, this Chardonnay is loaded with notes of vanilla and butter. Perfect for that New Year’s Eve lobster dinner.
  • Red Blend – Smooth Bordeaux style red blend from California with rich black fruit with well integrated tannins. Just the ticket for that leg of lamb or pork roast for Christmas dinner.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon – A big & bold Cabernet Sauvignon from California that has complex fruit notes with hints of cocoa. Having prime rib roast for holiday dinner then look no further.

For more information or to purchase these wines, visit Hair O’ The Dog at 219 Marlboro Avenue, Easton across from the Kohls parking lot.

Pawsitive Change Coming to Talbot County Elementary Schools

Emma LangfittPawsitive Change- In More Ways Than One…

We all have it. Loose change on the floor of our cars. Random coins buried between sofa cushions. Jars full of change we empty nightly from our pockets. These scattered coins may not seem like much, but when pooled together, loose change could mean the difference between life and death for a shelter animal at Talbot Humane.

Pawsitive Change, a community service project organized and managed by a group of 35 students from Easton High and St. Michaels High schools, will give students in all five TCPS elementary schools a place to bring spare change that will greatly benefit shelter animals. They also will be collecting canned cat and dog food. It will kick-off on Monday, Dec. 2 and run through Wednesday, Dec. 18. The Pawsitive Change project will benefit the Shiloh Fund at Talbot Humane, which allows the shelter to provide emergency medical treatment to animals that arrive at the shelter in desperate need of care above and beyond what shelters are usually able to provide. Supporting the Shiloh Fund is a great start to the holiday season of caring for and giving to others.

The Pawsitive Change project is spearheaded by EHS Sophomore Emma Langfitt, a Talbot Humane volunteer who was looking for a way to do more for the shelter animals. Emma researched and developed the program, proposed it to interim TCPS Superintendent Kelly Griffith, and when the project was approved, she solicited the help of other TCPS high school students. Alumni from Chapel, Easton, St. Michaels, Tilghman and White Marsh elementary schools will return to their old stomping grounds to talk to the younger students about what Talbot Humane does for homeless and unwanted animals in our community, and to encourage them to bring in spare change, if they can, to support the shelter. Collection cans will be placed in each elementary school classroom from Dec. 2-18. High school students will visit each classroom twice to talk to elementary students about exactly what they are raising money for and to explain that the canned food they collect will fill Talbot Humane’s pet pantry, which provides cat and dog food to people who can no longer afford to feed their animals.

The classroom that collects the most money for the Shiloh Fund will win a visit from Talbot Humane and Pawsitive Change t-shirts for the whole class.

The Shiloh Fund has helped Talbot Humane save the lives of animals such as Justice, a puppy who arrived at the shelter last winter with a leg so badly broken it needed amputation. It also helped Lily, a beautiful black lab, who came in with puncture wounds to her face and neck that needed to be drained in order to heal, and Black Pearl, a 4-month-old kitten who came to Talbot Humane with a ruptured eye that needed to be removed. The cost of these treatments is not in the normal operating budget, but because of the Shiloh Fund, their lives were saved. All of these animals are now living happy and healthy lives with their adoptive families.

Pawsitively Fabulous Boutique Opening at Lacaze Meredith in Easton

pawsitively fab adTalbot Humane is thrilled to be partnering with Lacaze Meredith Realty at 17 N. Harrison St. to open our Pawsitively Fabulous Boutique in downtown Easton.  The shop will be open Friday- Sunday beginning on Waterfowl Weekend and will open every weekend through December 22nd.

The boutique is filled with fresh ideas and gifts for everyone, not only animal lovers.  Even if you are not a pet owner, you will want to visit our shop for gifts and goodies for yourself, friends and loved ones.  Candles, clothing, home decor, pet toys and more will be filling the shop, all to benefit the animals of Talbot Humane.

The idea for the store came from Talbot Humane volunteer Melinda Sebastian.  Melinda is the brains behind our wonderful boutique each year at Bark in the Park and helps manage our gift corner at Talbot Humane.  With a background in retail, purchasing, and design, this was a perfect fit. “I wanted to find a unique and fun way to help raise funds for the shelter.  My mother works at LollyPop Farms, a shelter in upstate New York.  Their boutique raises thousands of dollars each year for the animals.”  Melinda was ecstatic when Lacaze Meredith offered part of their office space.  “This partnership will benefit both businesses,” shares Melinda. “Their location is perfect.  The staff at Lacaze Meredith has been so helpful, we are all excited to see this become a success!”

Melinda and her volunteers will be greeting shoppers Fridays and Saturdays 10AM-4PM and Sundays noon-4PM through December 22nd.  Once you’ve visited our boutique we hope you support the other downtown businesses as the too  give back to the community in so many ways.

Local Businesses Support Bark Week

Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Let The Cat Out…
Talbot Humane Introduces…

bark week

Talbot Humane is playing on the Discovery Channel’s popular “Shark Week” by introducing its own “Bark Week” celebration October 14-18, leading up to the 4th annual Bark in the Bark festival on October 19 at Idlewild Park in Easton.

Bark Week features a series of community events at Easton and St. Michaels businesses, showcasing and in support of Talbot Humane’s adoptable dogs.

Promotions will run Monday through Friday during Bark Week at Marcoritaville in St. Michaels and at The BBQ Joint in Easton, Wednesday at Rise Up Coffee in Easton, and Friday at the Village Shoppe in St. Michaels. Donation jars will welcome contributions at all locations.

Marcoritaville offers half-price burgers at lunchtime throughout Bark Week. Dogs from Talbot Humane visit on Monday from noon to 2 p.m., tempting diners both to adopt and to donate. Chef Mark will match the week’s donation jar contributions made at Marcoritaville.

Adoptable dogs visit The BBQ Joint on Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. The eatery will offer homemade dog biscuits in support of Talbot Humane all week long. “We hear those doggie biscuits are delicious!” said Patty Crankshaw-Quimby, Talbot Humane’s executive director.

She encourages everyone to come out and get their morning cup of joe at Rise Up Coffee in Easton on Wednesday from 7 to 11 a.m. The dogs visit from 10 to 11, and Talbot Humane’s mascot, SNAPS, will stop by to greet the coffee crowd.

Bark Week concludes on Friday with a visit to the Village Shoppe in St. Michaels from noon to 6 p.m. by volunteer Pete Howell with his dog, adopted from Talbot Humane. “Be prepared to have Pete talk you into adopting,” warned Crankshaw-Quimby, “or at least coming out for Bark in the Park the next day.”

Crankshaw-Quimby thanked all four businesses for their support of Bark Week. “The Bark Week events are building excitement for Bark in the Park on Saturday,” she explained. “Having these businesses take part in the effort shows how committed our whole community is to the work Talbot Humane does for the animals of Talbot County.”

100 Cat Challenge at Talbot Humane

Once again Tkittens for adoption at Talbot Humanealbot Humane is going CAT CRAZY with a 100 Feline Challenge to the community. The goal- to place 100 cats and kittens into new forever homes by September 30th. Waiving the usual adoption fee which ranges from $25-$75, during this challenge the adoption fee is to donate cat or kitten food to help provide care for the many cats still in need of a new home. Our cat population has remained over 200 for most of the summer.  Our hope is to bring awareness to the plight of cats and kittens in our area as well as find homes for the many homeless pets waiting at Talbot Humane. All cats and kittens are altered, vaccinated, tested for FeLV/FIV and microchipped prior to adoption.  So, as you can see, you are not only finding a new best friend, but, you have saved $250-400 verses that cat or kitten “Free to a good home” in the paper.  For more information on one of the many pets for adoption or on how you can volunteer, contact Talbot Humane at (410)822-0107.
