Thanks to a generous grant from The Snyder Foundation for Animals all cats 3 years old or younger, that are indoor/outdoor or outdoor only pets and owned by Talbot County residents will be spayed or neutered for only $10- this includes the rabies and distemper vaccinations! In honor of Independence Day and to show our appreciation for the men and women who have and continue to serve our country, Talbot Humane will be offering veterans and servicemen and women half price adoptions on all pets for the entire month of July.  “We couldn’t think of a better way to honor those who have sacrificed so much for our nation,” shares Patty Quimby, Executive Director for Talbot Humane. “The gift of a new best friend is priceless.”  All they need to show is military ID to receive the discounted fee at the time of adoption.  For more information on the animals for adoption or to submit an adoption application click HERE.

Part of our mission at Talbot Humane is to promote humane care of all animals through educational opportunities. Thanks to the cooperation of the public and private schools in Talbot county and our youth volunteer opportunities, we have been able to reach tens of thousands of children over the past 15 years. This year we are very proud to present our first Talbot Humane Outstanding Youth Volunteer Scholarship Award to Kristianna Saelens. Kristianna interned with Talbot Humane for the 2013-14 school year. She continued on as an important part of our volunteer team even after her internship was completed in February.

This scholarship is completely funded by donors who earmark their gifts for this program. Eligibility for this annual scholarship, gifted to a high school senior are as follows: the student must be a Talbot county resident, must have shown themselves to be an ambassador for the animals of our community through volunteering or internships with Talbot Humane, and must be planning to attend a 2 or 4 year school with a concentration in one of the animal sciences in the fall of the granting year. Scholarship applications will be reviewed by committee in April and awarded in May of each year.

Talbot County Animal Control and Talbot Humane want to remind you- it’s time to renew your Talbot County Pet Licenses.

• Who needs to be licensed?  All owned dogs and cats over the age of 4 months residing in Talbot County for 30 days or more.
• When do I need to renew?  Licenses are valid through June 30th of each year. 
• Where do I purchase?  Licenses may be purchased throughout the year at Talbot Humane, the county finance office or any of the town offices within Talbot County.
• What do I need to bring?  You will need to bring a valid rabies vaccination certificate for each pet.
• How much does it cost?  Spayed or neutered pets $5, unspayed or unneutered pets $25

NOTE: In order to receive the spay/neuter discount you MUST have proof your pet is altered.

Family Dog Class to Benefit Talbot Humane

Who can participate:

• Dogs 12 weeks or older which have received AT LEAST 2 rounds in the vaccine series.

•  Dogs 16 weeks or older rabies vaccine is required.

• Bordetella vaccine is recommended but not required.

• Proof of vaccines must be provided at time of registration

 Do you want to have a dog that is easier to have in your home? Not only will your dog learn better manners, you will be donating your tuition to TH for the care of the animals!

By the end of the 7 week session, you and your dog will be introduced to sit and down stay, greeting people, wait, recalls, and leash walking. Come join us for this special training experience!

First class is Thursday May 15th, NO DOGS THIS DAY. This is lecture only.

Statements like these are things we hear often at Talbot Humane.  The thing is,with a little guidance, a visit to the veterinarian or trainer, and a little work on the part of the family many of the issues pet owners face can be corrected!

While our mission speaks to preventing pet overpopulation, preventing acts of cruelty and neglect and providing a safe haven for animals of our community, another important goal is pet retention. All too often pet owners do not reach out to their local shelters, trainers or veterinarians until the problem is either unmanageable or they simply no longer want to deal with the issues. Talbot Humane wishes to be a resource for pet owners having problems. In cooperation with our local veterinarians, trainers and other animal related resources in our area, our hope is to offer solutions to pet problems such as litter box issues, inappropriate barking, destructive behavior, socialization and so on. The ultimate goal- pets stay in the home and reduce the number of animals entering shelters in our area.

Many people don’t realize just how important our foster program is to the animals of Talbot Humane. It is a lifeline for animals which simply would not have a second chance without the love and attention given by these friends who open their homes to the homeless. There are many reasons why people foster. Maybe they do not have the lifestyle for a “full-time” pet. Maybe they are at the max number of pets as far as the expense but still have lots of love to give. Often these are people who simply want to find a special way to help the animals of Talbot Humane!

There are many ways to be a part of our foster program. Here are but a few:

• Kitten season is approaching fast. We will be in need of foster homes for abandoned bottle babies.
• Kittens eating on their own but too young to be adopted are often in need of TLC.  This is a great option for people who work during the day as are mommas with babies.
• Dogs are you thing? We often have young pups in need of some training and TLC.
• Dogs in need of a quiet home after special surgeries or heart worm treatment.
• Dogs that are just not thriving in the shelter.
• A really cool program is our Bedtime with Benji program which allows you to have the joy of a dog in your home evenings and weekends, and they come back to Talbot Humane during adoption hours to find a forever home!

Many people are concerned that they will want to keep all the animals, that they will become too attached.  Well, it’s true, you do love these sweet animals as your own, and, there are often a few tears when it is time to say goodbye.  That heavy heart when they leave your care is quickly replaced with the happiness in knowing YOU saved a life and were the reason for a happy new beginning for that pet.

Our foster program IS the reason we have not had to euthanize a treatable, adoptable pet in over 5 years- Last year well over 350 animals benefited from our foster program- that is more than 26% of the animals that entered our facility!!! What a deal- our microchip service fee has been cut IN HALF for a limited time! 

According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP), less than 2 percent of cats and only 15 to 20 percent of dogs are returned to their owners. This is a sad statistic, but it’s true! Your dog and cat cannot tell us their name, address or phone number- that is without your help!

Talbot Humane wants to increase the chances of reunited lost pets and owners.  One safe and effective way to provide identification is through having your pet microchipped.  In recognition of Pet Identification Week April 20-26, Talbot Humane will be offering microchipping of your dog, cat or ferret for only $10 for the entire month of April. This includes the registration of your chip with HomeAgain, a new collar and an identification tag.  Now when was the last time you even purchased a collar for $10?

Join the fun on Saturday, April 26, in Oxford for a Dog Walk and Show to benefit the animals of Talbot Humane. Talbot Humane provides a safe and healthy environment for unwanted animals in its care; places adoptable companion animals in good homes; protects all animals from cruelty and neglect; and reduces the unwanted companion animal population through spay/neuter services.

This year, Talbot Humane is proud to announce Hair o’ the Dog as its Grand Sponsor for Oxford Day activities.

The Oxford Day Dog Walk, sponsored by TriCrown Inn for Pets, begins at 9:00 and runs from the Causeway to the Ferry Dock. The blessing of the animals takes place just before the Walk at 8:55. download the Oxford Day dog walk & show registration form HERE, the fee to participate is $25. Once at the Ferry Dock, show your pup pride in the Talbot Humane Oxford Day Dog Show. This is always great fun, a donation enters your pooch in as many classes as you want. Classes include Tallest Dog, Fluffiest Dog, Smallest Dog, Most Adorable Puppy, Dogs Adopted from Talbot Humane, Look Alike, Dogs Adopted from Other Rescue Organizations, Unique Looks, Best Trick and Best of Show.

The Annual Oxford Day Parade begins at 11:00. Enjoy music, free rides on the Skipjack Nathan of Dorchester, delicious food, Oxford Marketplace in the Park and more, all day long.
