FOSTER CARE GUIDELINES

  1. The foster care application is to be completed and approved.

  2. A home visit will be completed by foster care coordinator. This shall be repeated annually for all those actively involved in fostering animals.

  3. Waiver of liability must be signed prior to any animals entering the foster home.

  4. The Talbot Humane foster care program manual is to be read in its entirety prior to an animal entering the foster home.

  5. Once animals are in foster care they are the responsibility of the foster parent. Animals are not to leave their custody without direct consent of an authorized Talbot Humane employee. The animals are still property of Talbot Humane.

  6. Dogs should not be off leash once in foster care unless under direct supervision in a securely fenced yard.

  7. Cats are not to be allowed outside once in foster care unless harnessed and leashed.

  8. Any health or temperament concerns noticed while in the foster home are to be addressed at once with Talbot Humane.

  9. Any foster home must be equipped with a room or area which will quarantine the foster pet from other animals in the home.

  10. Talbot Humane is not responsible for the cost of treating personal pets if they become ill.

  11. In the case that a potential adopter wants to visit with the animal, the foster parent should be available to bring the pets to the shelter within 24 hours notice.

  12. It will be required that all foster parents attend outings with the foster pets to meet and greet the animals with potential adopters.

  13. Talbot Humane will provide a “starter” bag of food for the foster pet. Subsequent food needs are the responsibility of the foster parents. A higher quality food is to be fed to all foster pets.

  14. Puppies and kittens will be returned to Talbot Humane at the age of 8 weeks unless determined otherwise by foster care coordinator.

Talbot Humane will provide the following to all animals before entering foster care:

  1. Temperament evaluation of all animals.

  2. DA2PP-v, Bordetella, FRVCP-C, and worming of animals.

  3. Heartworm/FeLV-FIV testing.

  4. All animals are to be spayed or neutered prior to entering foster care. Exceptions will be made only for animals too young for surgery.

  5. Bathing and flea & tick control of all animals.

  6. Nail trimming of all animals.

"Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is--whether its victim is human or animal--
we cannot expect things to be much better in this world."
