Talbot Humane wants you to be prepared in a disaster
Have a place to take you and your pets. Using an emergency shelter should be a last resort, especially if you will be traveling with pets. Lets face it, they are not luxury retreats! Having a list of pet friendly hotels, boarding facilities, friends or family out of the area that you could call upon in case of evacuation is best.
Assemble a portable pet disaster kit. Whether away from home for a day or a week, you will need supplies to care for your pet. Keep items in an accessible place and store them in sturdy containers that can be easily carried. Your pet disaster supplies should include:
~medications and medical records, a list of any medical or behavioral problems as well as your veterinarian’s number and address
~sturdy leashes, crates and carriers to ensure your pets’ safety.
~current photo of your pet incase he/she gets lost
~food, potable water, food bowls, kitty litter/pan, and can opener
~ sheets, towels and pet toys
Know what to do as a disaster approaches. Warnings are issued hours and often days in advance. At the first hint of disaster, act to protect you and your pet. It is important to call ahead to confirm your emergency plans. Make sure all pets have properly fitted collars with ID securely attached.
Planning and preparation will enable you to evacuate quickly and safely. Always bear in mind animals react differently under stress. Make certain your animals are secured on leash or in crates at all times
Always transport cats and pocket pets in carriers. You should have a crate for each dog to ensure safe confinement and transport. The most well behaved animal may become frightened or aggressive during an event.
If you find that you must stay in a shelter and you are traveling with pets, make sure the shelter you choose is a “Pet Friendly Shelter”. Other shelters only permit licensed service animals.

Approximately three weeks ago, we were very involved in Tilghman with our spay/neuter clinic. Ever since a lot of us have been busy tying up loose ends.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Walk for the Animals 2008
Date: May 3, 2008
Time: registration begins at 9am
Location: Inn at Perry Cabin Field
Looking for something fun for the entire family, including your pooch? Then plan on attending this year’s Walk for the Animals. Enjoy a fun filled morning scheduled to include blessing of the animals, caricatures by Rick Kollinger, and a scavenger hunt through “the town that fooled the British”!
Talbot Humane works diligently to reduce the pet overpopulation problem through aggressive spay/neuter programs. While all shelter animals are sterilized prior to adoption our goal is to offer spay/neuter services to any Talbot County resident in need of help.
Help us reach our goal by making donations and collecting pledges for the 9th Annual Dog walk! Each dollar pledged goes directly to spaying or neutering an animal in need. Get your friends, family and co-workers in on the action to help us make a difference- no animal should be left behind.
OUT AND
ABOUT WITH TALBOT HUMANE
On June 2, our volunteers and staff were out with some
of our adoptable pets at the recent Adopt-a-Thon at
Tuckahoe Steam and Gas. The animals always enjoy an
outing, especially if it gives them a chance to show
their best qualities. See
photos!
